New Delhi, August 14: Car owners of Delhi! From this October there won’t be a need for you to tell which fuel run vehicle you are using as petrol and CNG running cars will stick light blue colored stickers and diesel running cars will paste orange colored stickers. This order was given by the Supreme Court (SC) on Monday.

Just over two weeks ago, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) had put forward its suggestion to the Supreme Court about color-coding the vehicles in the Delhi-NCR region. The idea is to identify which vehicle is running on what kind of fuel. Well, the SC has given the go-ahead to implement this scheme, which could very well see a nationwide implementation.

Vehicles with a diesel engine will have a hologram-based orange sticker on the front windshield, whereas vehicles running on petrol or CNG (compressed natural gas) will have a light-blue colored sticker. These stickers will also carry the date of manufacturing of the vehicle. The apex court has directed the ministry to ensure that vehicles on the roads of Delhi-NCR have these stickers by September 30, 2018.

This initiative has been taken to help curb the problem of air toxicity in and around the national capital. Currently, diesel vehicles of more than 10 years and petrol ones of more than 15 years of age are not allowed to be on Delhi-NCR roads. The registration of such vehicles has also been stopped. With the stickers and the date of manufacturing prominently displayed on the windscreen, it will become easier for the authorities to identify, stop, check and penalize offenders.
