Shiv Sena opposes Kumaraswamy’s Belgaum move; seeks intervention from Maharashtra government

Mumbai, Aug 2: Questioning Karnataka government’s proposed move of Belgaum as the second state capital, Shiv Sena Chief Uddhav Thackeray has asked all political parties in Maharashtra to unite against the proposal.

Invoking the long-pending boundary dispute between Maharashtra and Karnataka, Shiv Sena in its mouthpiece took a swipe at Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy and charged JD(S) –Congress government of hurting the sentiments of Marathi speaking citizens living in the boundary region.

Citing that legal status of the inter-state dispute, Shiv Sena observed that Karnataka cannot move forward with its proposal of new capital status to Belgavi as the matter is before the court. The party Chief also sought Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s intervention and demanded a special plea challenging the alleged proposal of Karnataka government.

Terming it as the conspiracy against the Marathi people, Sena asserted that it is committed to the welfare of Marathi people in Belgaum. Earlier, during Karnataka polls, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut urged the central government to declare Belgaum as a union territory.

In order to placate the ongoing protest on the issue of separate north Karnataka state, Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy has decided to accord a second capital status to Belgaum.

Many north Karnataka outfits are protesting against the alleged budgetary discrimination. In 2006, Janata Dal (Secular)- BJP government had passed a resolution on Belgaum as Karnataka's second capital.

According to media reports, the Karnataka government has decided to shift some key administrative offices to Belgaum. the JD(S) – Congress government soon will take the final call on the long-pending proposal.
