As rainfall recedes, Kerala focuses on rehabilitation with people returning back home!

Thiruvananthapuram, August 21: As the rainfall in Kerala rebates, people in relief camps are heading back to their respective homes. With people returning home, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that the government has also decided to distribute cleaning kits to the families.

Chairing the cabinet meeting, the Chief Minister today decided to seek relief package worth 2600 crore rupees from the Centre. The cabinet also recommended the governor to convene special assembly session on August 30th to discuss relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction activities.

Major thanks to the defence forces for accomplishing an exemplary mission by evacuating people, the rescue operations in the state is almost complete. There have been commendable examples of the armed forces performing an extraordinary job by rescuing thousands. At present food water and medicines are being distributed by voluntary organizations on foot.

The rescue efforts in Chengannur have been completed after it was ensured that no one had been left stranded in any part of the region. The accessibility to places has become easier as the water level receded. The service of the navy will continue in Chengannur. The areas in which Pamba River had flowed suffered serious damages. Thousands of homes were affected by the flood.

Pertaining to the rail services, the rail services are being partially resumed in flood-hit Kerala while the Kochi airport will also resume operations from 26 August. Services in Kayankulam-Kottayam- Ernakulam, and Palakkad-Shoranur-Kozhikkode sections have been restored. Train operations in Aluva- Thrissur, Thrissur-Shoranur have been restored.

Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) said that it would strive to restore operations in Kochi airport from 26 August 2018. The note said that all 800 runway lights had to be removed, tested and refitted for safety purposes. It added that 2,600-meter boundary wall of the airport had been lost during the flood. Authorities said that milling work necessary to restore the runway would be completed in two days.
