India bags maiden medal in Sepak takraw at Asian Games 2018

Jakarta, August 22: India on Tuesday bagged a bronze medal in Sepak takraw in the Asian Games being held in the Indonesian capital Jakarta. Notably, this was India’s maiden medal at Asian Games in Sepak takraw which took medal tally to 8.

 

Despite losing to Thailand by 0-2 in the semifinals, the Indian men’s regu team was awarded a bronze medal. India had defeated Iran 21-16, 19-21, 21- 17 in the first match to make a winning start to their campaign.

India, however, lost to Indonesia 0-3 in the second Preliminary Group B match of the day but still advanced to the last-four stage and be guaranteed of at least a bronze.

Earlier, in the day, young Indian sensational shooter Saurabh Chaudhary and Abhishek Verma won Gold and silver respectively in 10m air pistol event. While on Monday, Vinesh Phogat created history by becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to win a gold medal at the Asian Games.

Earlier, on the first day, exemplifying their electrifying performance, Indian athletes won three medals including a Gold from Bajrang Punia. The total count of medal for India goes to 5.

Asian Games is having the participation of around 11000 athletes from 45 countries including 540 Indians in 40 sports and 67 disciplines consisting of 28 Olympic sports, 4 new Olympic sports and 8 non-Olympic sports. Some of the events, including Handball and Football, began last week. The Indian contingent at the games was led by Javelin Thrower Neeraj Chopra with the national flag at the glittering opening ceremony.
