Indian ace Ankita Raina bags bronze at #AsianGames2018 ; Contingent bags 16 medals so far including 4 Gold

Palembang, August 23: Indian ace Ankita Raina on Thursday bagged a bronze medal at the Asian Games being held in Palembang and Jakarta in Indonesia. With Ankita’s laurel, the medal tally of India has reached to 16 including 4 gold, 3 silver and 9 bronze medals.

 

Notably, Ankita Raina lost to China’s Zhang Shuai in the women’s singles semifinal at the Asian Games and had to settle for bronze. Ankita lost to China’s Zhang Shuai by 4-6, 6-7 (6) in a hard-fought contest that lasted a little over two hours.

With the bronze medal, the 25-year-old Ankita became only the second Indian woman to have her name in the Asian Games’ singles medallists list. Earlier, in the tournament, Ankita Raina defeated her Hong Kong opponent Eudice Chong 6-4, 6-1 in the quarterfinal match and stormed into semifinals where she eventually lost.

 

India’s best women’s singles performance in the Games came from Saina Mirza, who notched up a silver in the 2006 edition in Doha, followed by a bronze by her in 2010, Guangzhou.
