Srinagar, August 27: As many as four newly recruited terrorists belonged to the Pakistan based-terror outfit Al-Badr were arrested on Sunday from Kalaroos area of Kupwara district in Jammu and Kashmir. Heavy arms and ammunition were also seized from the arrested terrorists.

Notably, security forces including personnel of Indian Army and CRPF launched a joint search operation after intercepting the attempt of several terrorists to cross the Line of Control (LoC) into the Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir (PoK).

Security forces immediately ambushed the terrorists and forced them to surrender. Out of seven, four were arrested while three others managed to escape under the cover of fire. However, a search operation is currently underway.

Defence spokesman Col Rajesh Kalia said, "On receipt of credible information about four newly recruited terrorists being guided by three terrorists of Al-Badr for a planned exfiltration, the Army in a joint operation with police, laid an ambush and trapped the terrorists in upper reaches of Kalaroos in Handwara."

He further said that after a brief gunfight, "extreme restraint was exercised and opportunity given to the terrorists to surrender". "While the four newly recruited terrorists surrendered. The three Al-Badr terrorists deserted the new recruits and fled under the cover of fire," Col Kalia said, adding war-like stores were recovered from their possession.

Interestingly, the four youths from Kupwara district were arrested barely 24 hours after their pictures showing them wielding AK Rifles went viral on social media. On Saturday, terrorists lobbed a grenade at a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) patrol at a bypass crossing in Lasjan area in Srinagar. No causalities or injuries have been reported.

On August 21, security forces gunned down one unidentified terrorist after a fierce encounter broke out in Kupwara district. Earlier, the centre has said that 110 terrorists were killed in the first seven months of this year.
