Flooded roads and traffic jams keeps Delhi at halt, #DelhiRains disrupt normal life

New Delhi, August 28: The rainfall this year created havoc with disrupting the normal life of people and flooded roads. Adding to the list of states witnessing heavy rainfall, places in Delhi and Gurgaon led to flooded roads and traffic jams this morning. Pictures on social media showed cars and bikes driving through flooded roads.

Owing to heavy rainfall, a few schools in Gurgaon have announced a holiday due to the bad weather. Morning peak hour traffic was affected because of flooding of major roads, prompting the Delhi Traffic Police to put out alerts on Twitter. #DelhiRains was one of the top trends on Twitter this morning.

 

The Met department predicts rain in Delhi till Thursday. The traffic towards the busy Delhi-Jaipur-Mumbai highway was also disrupted. School children and their parents who were stranded for hours in flooded, jam-packed roads in Gurgaon were forced to turn back home.

 

Areas around Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, Teen Murti Bhavan and RK Puram among others witnessed heavy rains and lightning in the morning. The Delhi Traffic Police has also issued advisory. The Delhi Traffic Police tweeted, "Waterlogging reported at Inderlok Chowk towards Zakhira near underpass. Kindly avoid the stretch."

 

Assistant Commissioner of Police Heera Singh said that the traffic movement on the Delhi-Jaipur-Mumbai highway was severely hit due to waterlogging. With this heavy rainfall seeping in, in the state of Delhi, residents shared photos of waterlogged roads and information about weather in the area on the social media. Power cuts were also reported at many places.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier predicted heavy rain at isolated places over Uttarakhand, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, East Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, Sub Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Konkan, Goa, Telangana and Coastal Karnataka on Tuesday.
