Proud! India completes half century at ongoing Asian Games; bags 50 medals including 9 gold

Jakarta, August 29: On the ninth day of Asian Games i.e on Tuesday, Indian athletes bagged a total of five medals including a gold, three silver and 1 bronze. Putting up an impressive show, Indian athlete Manjit Singh clinched a gold medal in the men’s 800m race while Jinson Johnson won the silver medal in the same event.

 

Notably, Manjit Singh, who came from behind to take the gold clocked an impressive 1 minute 46.15 seconds. Jinson Johnson won the silver medal with a timing of 1 minute 46.35 seconds. On the other side, India’s mixed 4x400 metres relay team of Muhammed Anas, Hima Das, Rajiv Arokia and Poovamma Raju win the silver medal behind Bahrain. India clocked an impressive timing of 3 minutes and 15.71 seconds.

19-year old Pincky Balhara has gone down in the final of the women’s 52 kg Kurash competition and settled for a silver medal. Malaprabha lost the semi-final bout of the women’s 52 kg Kurash event, therefore, had to settle with bronze.

Earlier in the day, Olympic Silver Medalist PV Sindhu bagged Silver medal after losing to Taipei's Tai Tzu Ying by 13-21, 16-21 in the finals. The medal tally of India reached to 50 including 9 gold, 19 silver and 22 bronze and stands at eighth place.

BACKGROUND:

The best performance by India at the Asian Games came at the 2010 edition in Guangzhou, China where they finished sixth with 14 gold, 17 silver and 34 bronze. This year, around 12,000 athletes from 45 countries will compete in 40 disciplines.
