New Delhi, August 29: In recent years, awareness of sports in our country is increasing mainly due to the trending hashtags #KheloIndia #HumFitTohIndiaFit #KheloFastJeetoFast. In order to create awareness among the country for sports, we celebrate National Sports Day today.


 

The Day is celebrated on 29th August every year to mark the birthday of legendary hockey player Dhyan Chand. Dhyan Chand represented India for 22 years and scored 400 goals for the nation. In the final of 1936 Berlin Olympics, Dhyan Chand scored three goals and India registered a thumping win against Germany 8-1. The hockey final in Berlin is regarded as one of the finest performance by Indian side in the Olympics. After that match, people started regarding the Indian side as ‘a virtually invincible team’.

 

Prime Minister Narendra has greeted all sports enthusiasts on this occasion. In a tweet, Modi also paid tributes to the phenomenal hockey player, Major Dhyan Chand on his birth anniversary.

 

Prime Minister has urged people to give priority to sports and fitness related activities, which will contribute towards a healthier India. Modi saluted all those who have represented India in various sporting events. He said, their hard work and resolve has led to several milestones. He said this year has been great for the sporting fraternity, with the Indian athletes excelling in various tournaments including Asian Games 2018 and Commonwealth Games.

Minister of Information and Broadcasting, as well as Youth Affairs and Sports Rajyavardhan Rathore, has paid tributes to Major Dhyan Chand on his birth anniversary. In a tweet, he called everyone to give tributes to one of the country's greatest sports icons by inculcating sports as part of their lifestyle.
