Assam, Nagaland and Uttar Pradesh drools under heavy rainfall, relief camps run for rescue

Guwahati, August 3: Incessant rainfall in the north has disrupted the normal life of people in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Assam, and Nagaland. The heavy rainfall has resulted in causing floods, landslides and immense damage to property and livestock.

In Assam, there is no respite from flood fury in 8 districts. Several rivers including the Brahmaputra are flowing above the danger level. Flood situations remain critical in the Golaghat district due to the release of excess water by NEEPCO from Doyong reservoir. Overall more than 1 lakh people are reeling under the fury of the flood in 8 districts.

Relief and rescue measures have been intensified at flood-affected areas. Over 20 thousand displaced people have been shifted to relief camps at Golaghat and Sivsagar districts. 
Normal life is out of gear in many cities of the state of Uttar Pradesh due to torrential rain leading to traffic snarl and reports of house collapse and roads caving in. Two persons including an old woman died when a wall collapsed in Gonda district yesterday night. Till now 114 people have lost their lives due to rain-related incidents and more than 100 others are injured.

Most of the deaths occurred due to wall and house collapse, uprooting of trees, electrocution and caving in of land. Major rivers in State are flowing above danger mark. According to a Central Water Commission’s report Sharda, Yamuna and Ghaghra rivers were flowing above the danger mark while the water level of Ganga River is rising continuously.

Normal life has been disrupted as roads connecting several parts of the districts of the state are completely cut off. The Northeast region has been heavily affected due to heavy rainfall creating disruption in normal life.

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi has requested for immediate interim Central assistance. Officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs called on the State Chief Secretary to inquire about the situation. 35 personnel from NDRF from Doimukh, Arunachal Pradesh have reached Dimapur for relief and rescue operations.
