Centre tables amendment bill in Lok Sabha to restore original provisions of SC/ST Act

New Delhi, August 3: The central government on Friday tabled a constitutional amendment bill in Lok Sabha to restore the original provisions of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

 

Notably, Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Thawarchand Gehlot tabled a constitutional amendment bill in Lok Sabha to dilute the March 20 Supreme Court order and restore the original provisions of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

He in a tweet said, “Union Minister, Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment @TCGEHLOT tables SC/ ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Amendment Bill in #LokSabha.”


All the lawmakers present in Lok Sabha granted their permission to Minister Thawarchand Gehlot by the voice of vote. After the voice of vote, Thawarchand Gehlot tabled a constitutional amendment bill of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

To top misuse of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe act, the Supreme Court on March 20 this year said that there shall be no immediate arrest in cases lodged under SC/ST Act against public servants. On August 1 this year, Narendra Modi led BJP government at centre finally decided to overturn the ruling of the apex court order on SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
