Balasore, August 3: Strengthening its sack of defence armoury, India on Thursday successfully test-fired an indigenously developed supersonic interceptor missile from Odisha coast. Notably, the test was conducted to validate some improved features of supersonic interceptor missile.

The supersonic interceptor missile, which was launched from a launchpad-4 of the Integrated Test Range on Dr Abdul Kalam Island in Odisha is yet to get a formal name. The interceptor was test fired from a canister at 11.24 am engaging a simulated target at low altitude roared on its trajectory to hit the target mid-air on the sea surface.

The supersonic interceptor missile is developed as a part of efforts to have a multi-layer ballistic missile defence system. It is capable of destroying incoming hostile ballistic missiles. The interceptor is a 7.5-metre-long single-stage solid rocket propelled guided missile equipped with a navigation system, a hi-tech computer and an electro-mechanical activator.

Importantly, the interceptor missile had its own mobile launcher, secure data link for interception, independent tracking and homing capabilities and sophisticated radars.

On July 16 this year, DRDO successfully test-fired BrahMos supersonic cruise missile from Odisha's Chandipur range launch pad. The test was conducted in order to increase the longevity of its life.
