Srinagar, August 30: In a major crackdown, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Thursday nabbed Syed Shakeel Ahmad, the younger son of Pakistan based terror outfit Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin in the Rambagh area of Srinagar in connection with the 2011 terror funding case.

Notably, the NIA along with the local police and CRPF raided the house of Syed Shakeel Ahmad and arrested him in connection with the 2011 terror funding case. Now Shakeel is being brought to Delhi for further questioning in the case.

In a statement, the NIA spokesperson confirmed the arrest of Syed Shakeel Ahmad. The spokesperson said, "NIA team along with CRPF and local police arrested Shakeel, the son of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin from Rambagh in Srinagar."

Shakeel is a senior lab technician at the Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) who was arrested after he failed to respond to 3 different summons from the NIA for questioning.

In October last year, NIA had arrested Syed Salahuddin's elder son Syed Shahid Yusuf in connection with 2011 terror funding case. He is being currently lodged in the Tihar Jail in Delhi along with 4 others accused including Ghulam Mohd Bhat, Mohd Sidiq Ganai, Ghulam Jeelani Liloo and Farooq Ahmad Dagga.

Syed Shahid Yusuf was found to be in touch with Saudi Arabia-based Hizbul Mujahideen operative Aijaz Ahmad Bhat, who is also an accused in the terror funding case and had received money to allegedly create unrest and terrorist activities in Jammu and Kashmir region.

The US government last year in August had designated the Syed Salahuddin-led Hizbul Mujahideen group as a 'foreign terrorist organization'. "Hizbul Mujahideen is led by Specially Designated Global Terrorist Mohammad Yusuf Shah, also known as Syed Salahuddin. Hizbul Mujahideen has claimed responsibility for several attacks, including the April 2014 explosives attack in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, which injured 17 people," a statement issued by the US Department of State had said.
