Impressive silver-medal finish at Champions Trophy leads Indian men's hockey team to gain fifth spot in FIH rankings

New Delhi, August 8: The Indian Men's Hockey team gained fifth position in the latest FIH rankings chart released on Tuesday. This comes days after Indian team put up an impressive silver-medal finish at the Champions Trophy.

 

Notably, Australia defeated Indian Men's Hockey team in the finals of the Champions Trophy via penalty after the two teams were locked 1-1 in regulation time in the Netherlands last month. India was the only team which registered a gain in ranking among the top 10 teams with a total of 1484 points.

England, Spain and 2012 Olympic champion Germany are behind Indian team in the rankings list. Australia maintained its top position with 1906 points while Argentina, Belgium and Netherland stand at 2nd, 3rd and 4th position respectively. However, the second best Asian team is Malaysia at number 12th and is followed by Pakistan and Korea.

In the women’s rankings also, the Indian team gained one spot to rise to the ninth position in the latest FIH rankings. The Indian women’s team is the ranked highest in Asia, ahead of the likes of Korea (10th), China (11th) and Japan (14th).

World champion Netherland remained on top, ahead of England, Australia, Argentina and Germany. The Irish team, which surprised the world by reaching the final of the World Cup, jumped eight places to be to take the eighth spot.
