Chennai, August 8: PM Modi reached Chennai to pay last respects to DMK strong leader M Karunanidhi. PM Modi speaks to MK Stalin and Kanimozhi after paying last respects to Kalaignar. Along with this Defence Minister Nirmala Sitaraman paid her respects to DMK patriarch Karunanidhi at Rajaji Hall.


 

Lok Sabha adjourned for the day after mourning Karunanidhi's demise. Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan announced the demise saying with profound sorrow, I've to inform the House about the sad demise of Karunanidhi who passed away on 7 Aug 18. He served as CM of Tamil Nadu for 5 times. In his demise, the country has lost highly popular & eminent personality.

The Tamil Nadu government has announced seven-day mourning in his honor.

Meanwhile, Madras High Court has directed the Tamil Nadu government to allow a space near Anna memorial on Marina Beach for a decent burial of DMK president.

Mortal remains of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President M Karunanidhi has been kept at Rajaji Hall in Chennai for people to pay their homage Ninety-four-year-old Karunanidhi passed away at a hospital in Chennai on Tuesday evening.

 

The central government has declared state funeral for him as a mark of respect for the departed soul. The national flag will fly half mast in Delhi and all state capitals today. A Home Ministry spokesperson said, the Central government will observe state mourning across the country today and there will be no official entertainment during the day. Tamil Nadu government has declared a holiday for educational institutions and government offices today.
