Indian athletes continue to shine at Asian Games; finishes Day 13 with 6 medals

Jakarta, September 1: Indian athletes continue to make us proud at the International arena by winning medals. Notably, on the 13th day of Asian Games, India bagged six medals including two silver and four bronze. With this, the medal tally of India reached to 65 including 13 gold, 23 silver and 29 bronze and stands on eighth place.

 

Indian women’s team though faced a loss against Japan in a neck-to-neck fight by 1-2 and settled for silver medal. Japan took the lead in the first quarter courtesy Shimizu before Neha Goyal drew with Japan in the second quarter. In the third quarter, Motomi put Japan ahead in the final 15 minutes to win their first Asian Games gold.

Meanwhile, Indian boxer Vikas Krishan also settled for a bronze medal in the Men’s 75kg Boxing after he was declared medically unfit to compete in the semifinal match against Kazakhstan’s Amankul Abilkhan. On the other side, India clinched three medals in sailing with Varsha Gautham and Sweta Shervegar clinching silver in the 49er FX women’s event and Harshita Tomar claiming bronze in the Open Laser 4.7.

Defending champions India settled for a bronze medal after losing 0-2 to Hong Kong in the semifinals of the men’s squash event at the Asian Games. The Indian men’s team comprising Saurav Ghosal, Harinder Pal Singh Sandhu, Ramit Tandon and Mahesh Mangaonkar was no match for Hong Kong, who had won bronze in the last edition at Incheon.

Earlier, the Indian women’s team assured itself of at least a silver after reaching the finals, following a stunning 2-0 win over title-holer Malaysia in the semifinals.

BACKGROUND:

The best performance by India at the Asian Games came at the 2010 edition in Guangzhou, China where they finished sixth with 14 gold, 17 silver and 34 bronze. This year, around 12,000 athletes from 45 countries will compete in 40 disciplines.
