SIT comprising five officers constituted in Punjab to investigate criminal cases related to sacrilege incidents

Chandigarh, September 11: A Special Investigation Team (SIT) was constituted in Punjab on Monday to investigate the criminal cases/FIRs related to sacrilege incidents and to ensure further legal action at the earliest.

 

Notably, the Punjab Government led by Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) in accordance the recommendations of the Commission of Enquiry that comprises five officers under Director Bureau of Investigation Prabodh Kumar to investigate the criminal cases/FIRs related to sacrilege incidents and to ensure further legal action at the earliest.

According to an official spokesperson of the Punjab Government, a letter to this effect has been issued by the Director General of Police. The spokesperson further said that the others officers of SIT would be IG Crime Arunpal Singh, IG Crime Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, SSP Kapurthala Satinder Singh and Commandant PRTC Jahankhelan Bhupinder Singh.

This comes almost two weeks after Punjab Assembly passed the resolution to form a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe in the cases related to sacrilege of religious books. Recently, to check incidents of sacrilege and maintain communal harmony, Punjab government ordered the installation of CCTVs around religious places and other important sites in the state.

Earlier, Punjab cabinet approved amendments to CrPC and IPC to make sacrilege of all religious texts punishable with life imprisonment. The decision was taken for maintaining communal harmony in the state.
