Dispur, September 17: In past 48 hours, Assam police have arrested four hardcore terrorists belonged to Pakistan-based Hizbul Mujahideen terror outfit from different locations of the state.

The string of arrests of terrorists belonged to Hizbul Mujahideen terror outfit began with Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) arresting an Assam origin terrorist Qamar-uz-Zaman from Kanpur on September 13. According to the police, Hizbul Mujahideen has been sending money to the state through Qamar-uz-Zaman to expand the organizational base and to set up sleeper cells in the state.

After the arrest of Qamar-uz-Zaman from Kanpur, the Assam police arrested three other ultras belonged to Hizbul Mujahideen. On Saturday, Assam Police arrested a youth identified as Saidul Alam, who is the brain behind the expansion plans of the terrorist group in Assam. Saidul Alam is a resident of Lanka region in central Assam’s Hojai district.

Hojai district Superintendent of Police (SP) Ankur Jain in a press conference said, "Saidul Alam was a meritorious student, but he got in touch with terror elements in 2015 during his visit to Nizamuddin Markaz Masjid in Delhi. Alam got in touch with Qamar-uz-Zaman in 2018. Zaman, Alam and Shahnewaz (who was arrested by police earlier) were in constant touch since then. Alam went to Srinagar in April this year and got in touch with few Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists and he revealed it. In the meantime, Qamar-uz-Zaman directed Alam to verify few locations in Assam to expand organizational network and targeted Lumding area in Hojai district."

Meanwhile, other suspected terrorist, identified as Umar Faruk, was arrested on Sunday night from Byrnihat area at the outskirts of Guwahati. Two mobile phones and several contact details were recovered from him.

"Our investigation is going on to find out more information about the terrorist group’s plan. Qamar-uz-Zaman revealed that he sent money to Umar Faruk’s bank account from Srinagar to distribute it to several sleeper cells," SP Ankur Jain added.
