Erode, Sept 25: Citing the reason of inadequate evidence, the local court of Erode today acquitted brigand Veerappan’s nine close confidantes in the highly-sensitive abduction case of late Kannada superstar Rajkumar.

In its ruling, the third Additional Sessions Judge, Gobichettipalayam, Mani mentioned that prosecution has failed in proving the charges against the accused. The judge also expressed reservations about the witnesses produced by the prosecution.

On July 30, 2,000, Veerappan along with 14 associates kidnapped Kannada star Rajkumar from his farmhouse. After 108 days, Rajkumar was released by Veerappan.

Taking a cognizance of the complaint filed by Rajkumar's wife, Veerappan and his associates were booked under the serious charges of conspiracy and kidnapping.

In 2004, the sandalwood smuggler was killed in an alleged encounter near Dharmapuri.
