Additional Director M Nageshwar Rao appointed as New CBI Chief

New Delhi, Jan 11: After the dramatic exit of Alok Verma, Additional Director M Nageshwar Rao today assumed the office of the CBI Director. A native of Warangal district of Telangana, Rao, the 1986 batch Odisha cadre officer will head the top central agency.

Earlier, Rao was holding the charge of interim CBI director when Alok Verma and Rakesh Asthana were facing the probe. He was instrumental in shaping anti-insurgency operations in Manipur. On Thursday, the high-level selection committee under the Chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi sacked Verma over the charges of corruption.

The apex court on Tuesday reinstated controversial CBI officer Alok Kumar Verma and tuned down move taken by the Central government. Hours after the apex court verdict, despite SC directions, Alok Kumar revoked all the transfers order initiated by the interim CBI Chief.

Expressing displeasure over the development, former CBI Chief Alok Verma today tendered his resignation accusing center of destroying the spirit of Natural justice. The top screening committee had transferred Verma as Director General Fire Services.
