Major reshuffle in Taiwan: Su Tseng-chang will lead the new cabinet

Taipei, Jan 11: Taiwan today appointed the former chairman of the ruling party, Su Tseng-chang as premier after the incumbent Lai Ching-te, who resigned along with the entire cabinet in response to local election defeats.

President Tsai Ing-Wen announced Friday that Su Tseng-chang will lead the new cabinet in a major reshuffle after the elections.

 

On this occasion, Tsai said, “Taiwan needs someone with experience, will and ability to carry out follow up reforms.” Such reforms are already on a way, the next step is to share the benefit with its Taiwanese people.

Further, Tsai said, Su’s creativity is impressive, as evidenced by his bold recruitment of young talent and his adaptation of innovative promotional strategies in the local government election campaign last year.

She also added that 2019 will be full of challenges such as dealing with the possible economic impact of the China-US trade war and with China’s efforts to impose its “one China, Two systems” formula for unification on Taiwan.

Su Tseng-chang thanked president Tsai for her trust and support. He promised to listen to the voices of the people.

Su 71, worked as chairman of the Democratic Progressive Party 2012-2014, as premier 2006-2007, and as chief of staff to President Chen Shui-Bian in 2004.
