January 16: Priya Prakash Varrier had started a storm on the internet with her first ever video when her “wink” had gone viral, making her one of the most searched people on instagram. Going viral seems to be a trend for Priya as her Bollywood debut film has already run into controversy.

Priya’s debut film, directed by Prasanth Mambully, “Sridevi Bungalow” is attracting bunch of negative comments ever since its trailer release. The trailer shows Priya signing an autograph and when a child asks her who her favourite actor is, she replies that it’s herself, Sridevi.

Reportedly, producer and the husband of late actor Sridevi, Boney Kapoor has sent a legal notice, suing the makers of the film.

Many comments are being put on social media saying that the teaser appears to be a cheap tactic by the makers to grab eyeballs, and ends up disrespecting the late iconic actor’s memory. The final shot in the trailer, which has riled up people is one of Priya lying in the bathtub, suggesting that she has drowned. The trailer appears to suggest that there was a conspiracy behind Sridevi’s death, with such deliberate shots.

Sridevi is regarded as one of the greatest and most influential actresses of Indian cinema in recent times. She died aged 54 in February 2018, by accidentally drowning in a bathtub in a Dubai hotel, leaving the film industry, her family and legions of fans in a state of shock. Though a lot of rumours did the rounds at the time, her death was declared as an accidental drowning.

Several users have commented on YouTube, where the trailer of “Sridevi Bungalow” has been uploaded, that it is in poor taste, and that Priya cannot match up to Sridevi’s acting prowess.

Meanwhile, Priya Varrier, echoing the director’s views, has tried balancing the situation by saying, “Sridevi is just the name of my character in the movie. Who would want to create such controversies? I think the curiosity surrounding the trailer is good and we have to leave it to the audience to judge if the film is based on the veteran actress Sridevi ma’am”.
