Due to EL Nino, 2019 may be warmer: WMO

New Delhi, Jan 2: 2018 was chilly and cold, but 2019 is likely to be warmer due to El Nino and the overall rise in temperatures.

The World Meteorological Organization said- chances of El Nino between 2018-February 2019 are found to be about 75-80%.

An official statement by Ministry of Earth Sciences stated that, as the year begins, the chill that covered large parts of India is likely to dissolve.

El Nino is a phenomenon associated with the warming of the Pacific waters and it is largely believed to have an impact on the Indian Subcontinent’s weather.

Each passing year from 2015 has noted high temperatures. From 2015-2017, every year become hottest.

Mr. Mohapatra, Additional Director General of India, Meteorological department said, “In El Nino year, summers and winters witness above normal temperatures, but it is too early to predict whether El Nino would have an impact on monsoon and how would the rainy season be”.

Although temperatures were rising in India last year, the no. of heatwaves in 2018 were less in comparison to the previous year. But, over 300 people died in thunderstorms, violent winds and lighting before to the monsoon.

In 2018, both the southwest and northeast monsoon were recorded as below the normal. Several parts of the country been witnessed agricultural distress due to unpredictable weather patterns.
