New Delhi, January 25: “Its time to do business ethically and straight. Those days are gone when there was an era of high taxes, high import duties, high direct and indirect taxes which caused people to look at different avenues to save tax. There was misuse of public funds. In last few years there has been an honest attempt to change that culture and develop the nation to its full”, said interim Finance Minister Piyush Goyal while addressing the 'Investiture Ceremony and International Customs Day' in New Delhi on Friday.

He spoke of the crucial role played by Customs Officers in collecting revenue that is in turn used for the welfare of India's poorer sections of society. “I ensure that every rupee of tax that is collected with your efforts is put to good use, is used for the welfare and the wider good of the society. The amount is used to give electricity to a family who has not seen the same for generations, give home to the homeless and make digital facilities to the remotest area of our nation”, he added further.

Today being the Interntional Customs day, it is the 66th day we are celebrating this day. The theme for the day lies at recognising the important role that custom officials and agencies play in securing the borders. ‘Smart borders for seamless trade’ beyond travel and transport truly encompasses our job very beautifully. “We have come a long way over these years. This collective effort across the world on these lines will help us transform the way government, its agencies and customers work with each other. The true test of our success will be the day when customers look upon custom officers as a friend and not an adversary. The many steps taken since 2014 have created a positive environment in this regard”, he confirmed.

“Custom officers have a crucial duty of collecting revenues that is in turn spent for the welfare of the country's poor. There cannot be any lapse in the collection of such revenue, and we must encourage customers to see this as duty of their own”, he added.

Meanwhile he informed about the health of FM Arun Jaitley. He is recovering at the faster pace. It is under his leadership that India has observed major positive differences like GST, IBC, reforming the tax structures, reforming the administration of different taxes. His huge jump in the ease of doing business ranking, securing our borders yet making them seamless has made India one of the brightest spot in the world economy today, he said.
