Assamese blessed with a committee gauging over their existing issues

 

 

New Delhi, January 3: The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi took several key decisions regarding assorted affairs in a briefing headed byUnion Ministers Rajnath Singh, Ravi Shankar Prasad and Santosh Gangwar in the national capital. The major decision undertaken regarding the state of Assam included setting up of a high-level committee to implement Clause 6 of Assam Accord to hold discussions with all stakeholders on quantum of reservation of seats in Assam Legislative Assembly and local bodies for Assamese.

 

“The committee is expected to be set up in next three days. It will hold discussions with all stakeholders and assess the required quantum of reservation of seats in Assam Legislative Assembly and local bodies for Assamese people.”, said Home Minister Rajnath Singh while addressing the media. “The Committee will also assess the requirement of measures to be taken to protect Assamese and other indigenous languages of Assam, quantum of reservation in employment under the state govt and other measures to protect, preserve & promote the cultural identity of Assamese people”, he added further.

 

In the series of tweets, he additionally informed, “Clause 6 of the Assam Accord envisaged that appropriate constitutional, legislative and administrative safeguards, should be provided to protect, preserve and promote the cultural, social, linguistic identity and heritage of the Assamese people.The Committee shall examine the effectiveness of actions since 1985 to implement Clause 6 of the Assam Accord.”

Cabinet yesterday also approved the establishment of a Bodo museum cum language and cultural study centre, modernization of All India Radio Station and Doordarshan Kendra in Kokrajhar. It green signalled naming a superfast train passing through BTAD as Aronai Express. Besides, it approved first-ever three way merger in Indian Banking system with amalgamation of Vijaya Bank, Dena Bank and Bank of Baroda.

 

Meanwhile, the Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal welcomed the decision expressing his gratitude towards the centre. “This Cabinet resolution gives much needed impetus to our fight to secure safeguards for our people. My thanks to PM Shri Narendra Modiji & Shri Rajnath Singhji for this landmark decision.”, he tweeted responding roundly.

Focussing over the issues related to Bodo community, the authority also approved a number of measures to fulfil the outstanding issues related to the Bodo community. The Bodo Accord was signed in 2003 which resulted in the establishment of a Bodoland Territorial Council under Sixth Schedule of the Constitution of India.

 

“The State Government will also take necessary measures related to appropriate land policy and land laws, besides setting up of Institutions for Research and Documentation of Customs, Traditions and Languages of the indigenous communities.”, asserted Singh concluding the talks.
