Los Angeles, February 11: Women and rap triumphed at the Grammys on Sunday in Los Angeles. With Female acts taking home top prizes including album of the year and best new artist, Childish Gambino also made history with his hit “This Is America” became the first rap-based track to win record and song of the year.

The 61st Annual Grammy Awards ceremony was held on February 10 at Staples Centre in Los Angeles, California. The grand night was hosted by 15 times Grammy Award winner Alicia Keys. Celebrities in the world of music rocked the night with their performances.

A year after female voices were somewhat muted at the 2018 ceremony and the Grammys were criticized for the low number of female nominees, Kacey Musgraves’ country-pop release “Golden Hour” won album of the year while British singer Dua Lipa won best new artist.

Five of the eight ‘album of the year’ nominees were women, and six women were nominated for best new artist. Brandi Carlile, the most nominated women with six, won three honours in the Americana category.

Musgraves and Gambino were the night’s top winners, taking home four awards each. Gambino’s “This Is America” also won best music video and best rap/sung performance.

Gambino’s historic win comes years after rappers have struggled to win in the top categories, including Jay-Z, Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar.

The prestigious event was also attended by famed Indian music maestro AR Rahman. The music prodigy, who graced the celebrated event with family, took to Instagram to share inside pictures of the glitzy award ceremony.

This year, there were three Indian artists representing the country at the Grammy awards. These included London-based Prashant Mistry, New York-based Falguni Shah and US-based Satnam Kaur who were nominated in different categories for their albums Symbol, Falu’s Bazaar and Beloved respectively.
