New Delhi, February 14: With the LokSabha elections heading ahead, Sunil Chandra of Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has been appointed as the new Election Commissioner of India.
 
 
Chandra, an IIT graduate, is a 1980 batch officer of the Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax cadre). Chandra’s role was crucial in the Union budget as direct taxes remained the biggest element of the annual Finance Bill.
Meanwhile, Satya Pinisetty, Joint Commissioner of Income Tax, tweeted the appointment of Sushil Chandra merrily.

 
 
Currently, he is serving as the chairman of the CBDT till May 2019. This is his second extension after taking over as the chief of the CBDT, the apex policy-making body of the Income Tax Department, on November 1, 2016, cleared the report.
The commission is expected to announce the schedule for the general elections and a clutch of assembly elections over the course of the next few weeks.
