The Great Indian warrior Shivaji Maharaj, and a member of the Bhonsle Maratha clan, carved out an enclave from the declining Adilshahi sultanate of Bijapur that formed the genesis of the Maratha Empire. Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis tweeted saying ,"He is the architect of Hindavi Swaraj, the King of India in a united India, our adorable god, Rajdhiraj Chhatrapati of Maharashtra. Remembering him on his birth anniversary. Jai Shivaji". "Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was an epitome of courage, valour and compassion. He served the people by upholding truth and justice. Shivaji will always remain an inspiration for the people of India. I bow to him on his jayanti", said Home Minister Rajnath Singh.

Shiv Jayanti is a festival and public holiday in Maharashtra, it being celebrated in a small extent outside Maharashtra. Some people celebrate this day by Hindu Calendar in Maharashtra. Shiv Jayanti was started by Lokmanya B G Tilak with the first event in Pune. Since then the festival expanded on a large scale.
