Support of political parties required for simultaneous poll : CEC Sunil Arora

New Delhi, Feb 8: Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora on Thursday said that political class should come forward for the successful implementation of the simultaneous poll.

Speaking at the book launch here, Arora dubbed simultaneous elections as “desirable goals” and expressed that join efforts of political parties and other stake-holder are required to ensure the long pending electoral reform.

Referring to the old practice of simultaneous elections, Chief Election Commissioner stated that post-1967, due to political reasons, the precedent of simultaneous elections got disrupted. The top officer further added that steps are being taken for the effective implementation of the suggestions and ideas pitched by the law ministry regarding electoral reform.

Arora informed that as a mark of respect towards India’s first CEC Sukumar Sen, the Election Commission will organize a special lecture series focusing on Sen’s contribution to the electoral system. Sukumar Sen was the first Chief Election Commissioner of India who had monitored the first general elections in 1952.
