Google marks 86th birthday of Bollywood actress Nargis

Mumbai June1: Google on Monday mark the 86th birthday of Fatima Rashid popularly known with her screen name as Nagris who was born on June 1, 1929. Google celebrates her birthday for extra-ordinary work in the field of acting na social work.

Making her acting career debut as child artist in Talash-E-Haq in 1935, but her acting career began in 1942 with Tamanna. Over span of two decades Nargis gave many hit movies making most compatible pair with Raj Kapoor. She made her strong presence in the industry after super hit block buster Mother India.

In 1957, she played the lead in Mehboob Khan's 'Mother India' which became the first Indian movie to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Nargis won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress for her performance.

In 1958, she became the first film actress to be conferred with the Padma Shri and 10 years later, she would become the inaugural winner of the National Film Award for Best Actress for her performance in 'Raat aur Din'. She was also the first patron of the Spastics Society of India.

While during fire shoot in Mother India movie, Nargis was tapped in the fire blaze, wherein heroically Sun Dutt saved her life to whivh Nargis asked him for present, that too whatever, he wish for. Making a wish to marry her, Nargis married to Sunil Dutt in March 11, 1958.

Prior marrying to Sunil Dutt, Nargis had dated Raj Kapoor, however, Raj Kapoor being a married person the relation had to be called off wherein Nargis took the initiative for this. Although, Raj Kapoor’s presence after Nargis getting married to Dutt was less but Raj Kapoor was the reason for paving her way to National award.

Nargis was born in Calcutta to Punjabi parents. Her father was Abdul Rashid was from Rawalpindi while her mother Jaddanbai was a Hindustani classical music singer in Allahabad.

She succumbed to pancreatic cancer in 1981 at the age of 51. After her death, the Nargis Dutt Memorial Cancer Foundation was established. The best feature film on national integration is also given in her honour.

Nargis was also a prominent social worker of her time and was later a Rajya Sabha member. She died on May 3, 1981. Her son Sanjay Dutt made his film debut. Her daughter Priya Dutt was Former MP from Mumbai in 15th Lok Sabha.
