President Mukherjee's wife Suvra Mukherjee passes away following a cardiac arrest

New Delhi, August 18: Breathing her last at 10.51 this morning, President Pranab Mujkherjee's wife Suvra Mukherjee passed away today in New Delhi. Suvra Mukherjee suffered a cardiac arrest on 7th of last month and was admitted to Research and Referral Army Hospital.
Earlier, Suvra was admitted to the Army Research and Referral Hospital after complaining of breathlessness and discomfort and was being treated in the intensive care unit (ICU) of in Delhi Cantt.

About Suvra Mukherjee:                                              

First Lady Suvra Mukherjee was born on 17th of September 1940 in Jessore and married to Pranab Mukherjee, the President of India in 1957. Suvra Mukherjee was born on September 17, 1940 in Jessore (now in Bangladesh) and married Pranab Mukherjee on July 13, 1957.

She was an ardent fan of India’s national poet, Rabindranath Tagore, and an exponent of Rabindra Sangeet. She performed in the poet’s dance-dramas for long years in different parts of India, Asia, Europe and Africa.

Suvra founded the Geetanjali Troupe, whose mission is to propagate Tagore’s philosophy as expressed through his songs and dance-dramas. She was the guiding force behind the troupe’s productions.

She was also a talented painter with many group and solo exhibitions to her credit. She considered her mother, who was herself a painter, the source of her creative inspiration and her works won critical acclaim.

Suvra wrote two books namely Chokher Aloey, a personal account of her close interaction with late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, and Chena Achenai Chin, a travelogue recounting her visit to China.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the passing away of First Lady, Suvra Mukherjee.“Pained to know about the passing away of Mrs. Suvra Mukherjee. My condolences to Rashtrapati ji and his family in this hour of grief. Mrs. Suvra Mukherjee will be remembered as a lover of art, culture and music. Her warm nature endeared her to everyone she met,” PM Modi said. 

Also, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has condoled the passing away of President Pranab Mukherjee's wife Suvra Mukherjee. Banerjee said in a post in twitter that she had known Suvra boudi for more than three decades and she was a simple, lovable and a caring housewife. Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi also condoled the demise of the first lady.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi has expressed sadness at the passing away of First Lady Surva Mukherjee. In a message, Gandhi extended her condolences to President Pranab Mukherjee and other family members. She said, the entire country stood with them in this moment of bereavement.
