New Delhi, Oct 14: Firebrand BJP leader from West Bengal and actor Roopa Ganguly today took oath as Rajya Sabha member.

Speaking to the media after taking oath Roopa Ganguly said ,"I will do whatever is possible according to the Constitution of India to help in the endeavour to make our country a developed nation,"

"I will do whatever is possible according to the Constitution of India to help in the endeavour to make our country a developed nation,” said Ganguly. She further added that nomination to the upper house is huge responsibility.

After the resignation of Navjot Singh Sidhu, BJP nominated actor turned politician Roopa Ganguly to Rajya Sabha. Ganguly joined BJP last year ahead of the assembly polls of West Bengal. She fought election from the Howrah North. She lost to TMC leader Laxmi Ratan Shukla.Presently she is heading the BJP’s Mahila Morcha unit.

She became famous after playing the character of Draupadi in the mega hit television serial Mahabharat by B R Chopra. Beside Mahabharat, Ganguly has done several Bengali and Hindi films including Bahar Ane Tak and Saugandh. She was last seen in Ranbir Kapoor starrer Barfi.

She has also acted in a few Hindi and Bengali films in the 1990s and the 2000s. She has acted in films like Goutam Ghosh directed 'Padma Nadir Majhi', Aparna Sen's 'Yugant' and Rituparno Ghosh's 'Antarmahal'. She had also won the National Film Award in the best playback singer category for the Bengali film 'Abosheshey'.

Asked whether she would raise women related issues, the nominated lawmaker said, "I am from Bengal. I have got the responsibility to do something."

Expressing deep concern over the violence and atrocities on BJP workers in west Bengal she said, "Unless you see it with your own eyes you will not belive it. It is very important to raise proper issues."

Along with Ganguly , BJP leader L Ganeshan was also administered oath as Rajya Sabha MP by chairman Hamid Ansari here. He has been chosen from the state of Madhya Pradesh after the resignation of najma heptulla.

Speaking on the occasion Ganeshan described India's unity in diversity as an asset. Ganeshan said, "Alag bhasa alag desh lekin Bharat ek sesh (Different launguages different regions but India is one country)."
