Kuantan, October 24: While the cricket team was busy defeating New Zealand on Sunday, the hockey team played with the Pakistani team and ended with a fabulous victory. The Indian team outplayed the northern neighbour by 3-2 at the Men's Asian Champions Trophy at Malaysia.
Earlier, Pakistan coach Khawaja Junaid had said that the encounter against India will be the showpiece match of the Asian Champions Trophy and his side will provide an exhibition of attacking sub-continental hockey.
His point proved right but the result was against the favour of his fellow boys. India took the lead first in the second quarter through Pradeep Mor but Pakistan's Rizwan Sr scored an equaliser in the third quarter. Pakistan didn't know what hit them as India pursued brilliant counter attacking techniques to go 3-2 up from 1-2 down. It was a strong performance by India.
India had to work hard for the victory today despite taking an early lead through the maiden worldwide goal from young striker Pradeep Mor. This was the first goal for the 24-year-old Mor, who was playing in his 13th international and was one of the reserves for the Olympic Games.
Talwinder Singh had the first Indian shy at the goal in the 11th minute when he picked up a pass from the right on top of the circle and created some space as he turned for the reverse hit, but the shot soared high over the cross-piece.
India took the lead against the run of play in the 22nd minute when Pradeep Mor on the right flank latched on to the ball that had deflected off a Pakistani defender. Mor darted into the circle and sent in a firm shot from a very narrow angle that beat goalkeeper Imran Butt to land on target.
Ramandeep Singh, Akashdeep Singh used their skills and penetrate Pakistan's defence. India played without forward S.V. Sunil and midfielder Manpreet Singh, who have been ruled out of the tournament due to injury. Talwinder Singh, S.V Sunil, Lalit Kumar Upadhyay, Nikkin Thimmaiah, Affan Yousuf are the stars who attack with forward position.
"It is an awesome feeling to score the winning goal but more importantly it helped reduce pressure on the team. However, it a close escapes for Pakistan. Just like other teams, we today had a plan to play against Pakistan", he added.
With the incredible performance against Pakistan, India settled at the 2nd place in the points table after Malaysia, followed by Pakistan, China, Korea and Japan in the descending order. Earlier, India and Korea played out hard fought draw in the second match. In the opening match, India raced to emphatic victory over Japan 10-12.
