Beijing, October 25: At least 14 people killed and more than 147 injured in a powerful explosion at the site of some prefabricated houses in northwest China's Shaanxi Province on Monday. The explosion, cause of which is still not known occurred at around 2pm.
Five prefabricated houses were hit by the explosion causing damage to nearly dozens of buildings including the local hospital at Xinmin Township, Fugu County. Also, 58 nearby houses and 62 cars were damaged by the explosion.
As reported by authorities in charge of the rescue operation 106 are hospitalized and 41 have returned home following treatment on Tuesday. Rescue operation ended as of 9 a.m. on Tuesday.
Temporary houses had been built inside a residential compound. The prefab houses, owned by a local villager, were rented out in September. The owner of the houses is in police custody and an investigation is under way.
According to an initial investigation explosion could be caused by explosives. All people in the affected area were immediately evacuated by the rescue team in charge.
