New Delhi, Oct 3: After the resignation of Navjot Singh Sidhu, BJP nominated actor turned politician Roopa Ganguly to Rajya Sabha. She became famous for  playing the character of Draupadi in the mega hit television serial Mahabharat by B R Chopra.

Ganguly joined BJP last year ahead of the assembly polls of West Bengal. She fought election from the Howrah North. She lost to TMC leader Laxmi Ratan Shukla.Presently she is heading the BJP’s Mahila Morcha unit.

Beside Mahabharat, Ganguly has done several Bengali and Hindi films including Bahar Ane Tak and Saugandh. She was last seen in Ranbir Kapoor starrer Barfi.

She has also acted in a few Hindi and Bengali films in the 1990s and the 2000s. She has acted in films like Goutam Ghosh directed 'Padma Nadir Majhi', Aparna Sen's 'Yugant' and Rituparno Ghosh's 'Antarmahal'.

She had also won the National Film Award in the best playback singer category for the Bengali film 'Abosheshey'.
