Thane, October 5: A total of over 500 call centre employees from Thane were arrested for threatening the US citizens and robbing their money, Police informed on Wednesday. The raids was carried out by 200 policemen, most of them from CBI, who detained about 500 employees of some call centres from Mira Road area of Thane.
The raids were carried out on late Tuesday night and were continued in the wee hours of the Wednesday morning. The arrested persons of the call centres of Mira road locality posed as officials of US Tax department and took hold of bank information of US citizens.
They would call up the US citizens and demand their financial and bank details, failing which they would allegedly threaten them with dire consequences, including legal action. After obtaining the essential details from the American citizens, these call centre employees would siphon off money from their accounts, and surprising their daily turnover of such dealings was estimated to be over Rs. 1 crore.
Based on complaints received of these activities, police kept a tab on the call centre employees and subsequently raided their premises late Tuesday night. The process of registering offence in the matter was on, police said.
