New Delhi, November 18: Sprinter Dharambir Singh, India’s national record holder in 200m has failed a dope test forfeiting his participation in Rio Olympics. The athlete now faces an eight years ban as per the National Anti-Doping Agency.
Dharambir, 27, is a Haryana-born athlete. Earlier in 2012 Dharambir refused to take the dope test. He became the first male sprinter in 36 years to qualify for the 200-metres individual event when he clocked an impressive 20.45 seconds at the Indian Grand Prix in Bengaluru in July, which was a comfortable 0.05 seconds below the Rio mark of 20.50s.

With mere two days to go for Rio Olympics it is a shocking revelation for Indian contingent. After wrestler Narsingh Yadav and shot putter Inderjeet Singh, Dharambir became third athlete to test positive for banned substances in a test conducted by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA).

When the athlete was asked to stay back instead of boarding his scheduled flight on Tuesday, it was obvious that he failed the doping test. Dharambir will be facing a life ban since this will be a second offence by the Rohtak-based sprinter.
