Tamil Nadu, November 18: Two Indian fishermen were seriously injured and rushed to hospital when Sri Lankan navy fired at their fishing boat off Kodiakarai coast in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday.
These two men belonged to Nagapattinam and Karaikal in the southern state, were rushed to hospital in neighbouring Puducherry with bullet injuries.
Arrests of Indian fishermen, seizure of boats and firing at them are serious and disturbing incidents between the two countries. All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam(AIADMK) members met Prime Minister Modi and protested against the firing on Tamil Nadu fishermen by Sri Lankan navy. They urged PM Modi to summon Sri Lankan envoy to convey protest.
"The fishermen community of Tamil Nadu is in a state of shock. We expect that the Union government will act immediately and strongly in response," MPs said in a memorandum to PM Modi.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar said he would convey the concerns of the AIADMK members to the Defence Minister and the External Affairs Minister.
On November 5, after a high ministerial meet between Indian External Affairs Minister, Sri Lankan Foriegn Minister and Fisheries Ministers which stated that both government mutually agreed to the request of the fishermen associations against violence and loss of life in the handling of fishermen by the navies and coast guards of both countries.
"Despite this specific understanding reached at the ministerial level, it is very unfortunate that an incident has taken place," the MPs said.
