Ahmedabad, November 21: Union minister of textiles Smriti Irani distributed `Pehchan' identity cards to artisans from five clusters in Gujarat, namely Jamnagar, Naroda, Surendranagar, Amreli and Kalol on Saturday during the inauguration of thematic exhibition of handicrafts.
Refferring to PM Modi’s demonetisation drive to fight against black money Irani said, “Demonetisation is a gutsy and bold move. People queuing up outside banks are part of the fight against black money and I salute their spirit”
Around a month ago Irani launched the `Pehchan' initiative which is a move to register and provide ID cards to handicraft artisans and link them to a national database. Major benefit of this identity card is that artisan scan avail to benefit of any government scheme.
"The upgraded ID cards for artisans will be linked to their Aadhar card numbers and bank accounts so they can receive all cash transfer benefits from various government schemes directly," said Irani.
Irani announced distribution of free tool kits for SC/ST, Minority, BPL artisans & design workshops to train artisans and also declared commencement of 'Guru Shishya Parampara' initiative at 5 handicrafts clusters of Gujarat. Later, she also informed about the ministry’s initiative to organize insurance camps where artisans live and provide them a credit guarantee scheme and insurance at their doorstep.
Measures like such to motivate artisans has not only facilitates fine quality art but also convenience to portray such art is ensured.
