Victoria, November 24: Saina Nehwal made it to the quarterfinals of the Hong Kong Open Super Series after defeating Japan's Sayaka Sato with a score of 21-18, 9-21, 21-16 on Thursday. The match lasted for almost one hour.
Earlier, Saina defeated Thailand's Porntip Buranaprasertsuk 12-21, 21-19, 21-17 in the first round. Saina won the Hong Kong Open in 2010 after defeating China's Wang Shixian 15-21, 21-16, 21-17 in the final.

Saina made a competitive comeback in this 2nd tournament after undergoing a knee surgery. She lost in the first round of the China Open last week. She is likely to face PV Sindhu in the semifinals if both of them reach the stage.

Other Indians who are in the race include, Sameer Verma, who advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Japan's Kazumasa Sakai 19-21 21-15 21-11. Sameer earlier defeated Japan's Takuma Ueda 22-20 21-18 in the first round on Wednesday. He will be facing Malaysia's Chong Wei Feng in the next round.

Earlier, HS Prannoy lost to Malaysia's Chong Wei Feng 21-15, 11-21, 15-21 in the round of 16. He had beaten China's Qiao Bin 21-16, 21-18 on Wednesday.

In the pre-quarters of women's singles PV Sindhu will face Taiwan's Ya Ching Hsu, Taiwan. Ajay Jayaram will face China's Yuxiang Huang in the pre-quarters.
