Islamabad, November 27: Amid the ongoing tensions with India post Uri attacks Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has appointed Lt Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa as the new Chief of Army Staff (COAS), while Lt Gen Zubair Hayat as the Chairman Joint Chief of Staff Committee (CJCSC) on Saturday.
There have been many speculations and rumours coming out on the issue which were cleared by Pakistani government by appointing Lt Gen Javed Bajwa to takeover one of the most powerful responsibility of being an army chief.
Lt Gen Zubair Hayat is from the artillery and the serving Chief of General Staff. Both the generals are said to take up their post from Tuesday and will be promoted to the rank of four-star generals. The current army Chief Raheel Sharif retires after a three-year time span.Bajwa currently works as the Inspector-General Training and Evaluation. General Bajwa once served as a brigade commander in the UN peace-keeping operations in Congo in 2007 under Former Indian Army Chief General Bikram Singh.
General Bikram Singh on Bajwa’s selection said, "In the UN operations, Gen Bajwa's performance was totally professional and outstanding. But a military officer's conduct in the international environment is different from the way he conducts himself back home. There, he is governed by his country's national interests."
Though many people who have been with Bajwa claim that he is calm and extremely professional and has the potential to handle the major responsibility Pakistani army still faces many challenges, with attacks continuing and increasing tensions with India, especially post Uri attacks, which are to be tackled efficiently by the newly appointed army cheif
