Gandhinagar, November 29: In the bypolls elections in Gujarat, BJP emerged as the biggest winner after winning 109 seats out of 126 in 16 districts in which by-elections were held. The Congress managed to win only 17 seats. With less than a year to go for Gujarat assembly elections, the victory comes as a bog boost for the Bhartiya Janata Party.
In Gujarat district panchayat, taluka panchayat and Nagarpalika bypolls, BJP won 23 seats and Congress won 8 seats. In Surat - Kanakpur-Kansad nagarpalika polls, BJP won 27 seats out of total 28 seats, Congress won 1 seat. In Vapi nagarpalika polls, BJP won 41 seats out of 44, Congress won 3.
Yesterday, BJP also emerged as the single largest winning party in the Maharashtra bagging 851 seats in the municipal council polls conducted in 164 civic bodies which includes 147 municipal councils and 17 Nagar panchayats. This was followed by Congress which won 643 seats and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) winning 638 seats. While the BJP ally in the State Shiv Sena stood at fourth position getting 514 seats.
Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya projected the BJP's win in Gujarat as a reflection of people's support to Modi and policies of Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, who had taken over in August this year.
Union HRD minister Prakash Javadekar said that this is indication that people of India back the demonetization move. Our performance in local polls held across two states present the mood of the nation. We sense they are with us, he said.
