Mumbai, Dec 23 : On the eve of good governance day Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone of much awaited historic memorial of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at an island in Arabian Sea.PM Modi Modi will take a hovercraft from Girgao Chowpatty to the island to lay the foundation stone.
Earlier Informing about this historic moment Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the 'Shiv Smarak' will not only be the tallest memorial in the country, but in the entire world. He had thanked Modi for "making it possible."
Proposed on around 15-hectare Island, the memorial will be as high as 210 metres of which 60% would be the height of the statue alone. The total cost of the project is Rs 3,600 crore of which first phase would cost Rs 2,500 crore.
PM Modi will also lay the foundation stone for two Metro rail projects, elevated rail corridors project and the Mumbai Trans Harbour link. He will address a public function at the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) ground in Bandra. He will also inaugurate the newly-built campus of the National Institute of Securities Management in MIDC Patalganga in neighbouring Raigad district.
Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray will whose party is an ally of ruling BJP, is share the dais with Modi at the MMRDA event and he is also expected on board with PM Modi during the ceremony in Arabian Sea.
Earlier a group of fishermen were opposing the project citing the reason of erosion of marine life and ecology of the Arabian Sea. But a day before programme the fishermen protesting against a proposed Shivaji Maharaj memorial have decided to withdraw their agitation.
"Fishermen have agreed to withdraw their agitation against Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj Memorial Bhoomipujan," a senior official said, after a meeting between Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and fishermen association leaders in Mumbai. Fadnavis assured fishermen that the government will look into their concerns.
After Mumbai Modi will leave for Pune, where he will lay the foundation stone of the Pune Metro Rail project. NCP leader Sharad Pawar will share the stage with Modi at this event.
PM Narendra Modi’s one day Mumbai visit has its own political significancea as the state to witness the high-stake elections to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and other Municipal Corporation elections are few months away.
