Home ministry says no to NSG security cover for AGP chief Prafulla Kumar Mahanta

Guwahati, Dec 27 : Stressing on the government’s policy to stop the specialised counter-terror force from performing VIP security duty center has decided to cut short  the NSG security cover of former chief minister Assam — Prafulla Kumar Mahanta.

This is for second time when central government has amended the security profile of the VIPs. Earlier former chief minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi, lost the security provided by the special force.

When asked about the decision Prafulla Kumar Mahanta said “I have no issues if the Centre removes the NSG security cover” Asom Gana Parishad chief Mahanta, is in alliance with the ruling BJP in Assam. He has been vocal in criticising the Citizenship Amendment Bill (2016) of the Centre, which proposes to provide citizenship to persecuted religious minorities from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

Commenting on the issue a senior official of home ministry said, “There is a committee that looks into the current threat assessment of various personalities. He stated that the decision to remove Prafulla Kumar Mahanta’s NSG cover was also taken by the committee. The order was issued, but yet to be executed he added.

Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi has recently chaired the review meeting over the security of VIPs. There are two committees that decide the security category, the Protection Review Group and the Security Categorisation Committee, both headed by the Home Secretary. They include Intelligence Bureau officials.
