FANS holds seminar on national security in Andamans

Port Blair, Dec 30: Andaman and Nicobar Island Lt Governor Prof Jagadish Mukhi inaugurated a seminar organised by Forum for Awareness of National Security (FANS) at Port Blair on Thursday. The seminar was organised as part of the FANS “Shaheed-Swaraj Dweep Samooh Naman Yatra” currently underway in the islands.

The Yatra, a unique event being organised by FANS every year end was the brainchild of Indresh Kumar, senior RSS functionary and Patron of FANS. People from the mainland pay a five-day visit to the Islands first liberated by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose during the World War II.

Incidentally, it was Netaji Bose who renamed these Islands and ‘Shaheed’ and ‘Swaraj’ and underlined their strategic importance in guarding the maritime borders of India.

Lt Governor Prof Jagadish Mukhi inaugurated the seminar on the “Role of ‘Shaheed-Swaraj Dweep Samooh (formerly Andaman and Nicobar Islands) in the national security” held at the JNRM auditorium on Dec 29. The seminar was organised by Forum for Awareness on National Security (FANS) Port Blair Chapter.

Minister of state for MSME Giriraj Singh graced the occasion as the guest of honour. MP Bishnu Pada Ray, Chief Secretary Anindo Majumdar and a host of dignitaries from the mainland and the islands were present. FANS Patron Indresh Kumar was conspicuous by his presence at the seminar.

Addressing the inaugural function Lt Governor highlighted the strategic importance of A & N islands in respect of the national security and said that these islands are strategically important owing to their geographical location. He said that the central government was considering the need to strengthen the security in these islands.

By strengthening the security in the islands, India will be able to strengthen its position in the Indi-Pacific region, he added.

Praising the efforts of FANS with special reference to the role played by its Patron Indresh Kumar in creating national security awareness among the people across the country the Lt Governor said that the mission started by the FANS in the Islands is very much related to the island history and assured that efforts will be made to create awareness among the islanders on national security.

The islanders have a high feeling of nationalism and it will be easy to create awareness among them about the national security, he added.
