New Delhi, February 16: The country's food grains production is estimated to be 253.16 million tonnes in 2015-16. It is 1.14 million tonnes higher than the last year's production.
According to 2nd Advance Estimates of production of major crops for 2015-16 released today, the production is higher despite setback in Kharif crops due to deficient monsoon and Rabi crops due to shortage of water in reservoirs.
Total production of rice is estimated at 103.61 million tonnes, which is lower by 1.87 million tonnes compared to 2014-15. However, production of wheat is estimated at 93.82 million tonnes, higher by 7.29 million tonnes. Wheat production is also higher by 2.29 million tonnes than its five years’ average production.
Total production of coarse cereals is estimated at 38.40 million tonnes, lower by 4.47 million tonnes whereas pulses production of 17.33 million tonnes, is marginally higher.
Total oilseeds production in the country is estimated at 26.34 million tonnes, lower by 1.17 million tonnes. Production of sugarcane is also lower by 15.95 million tonnes and cotton by 4.11 million bales. Jute production is marginally lower.
