Shillong, April 2: While addressing the inauguration of a two–day National Seminar under the theme ‘Foreign Trade- A strategy for the economic growth of the North Eastern Region of India’ on Friday, the Governor of Meghalaya, V Shanmuganathan has said that trade and commerce with the South Asian countries is a must for the development of the North East region of India.
The National Seminar was organized with an aim to provide a platform for the resource persons and participants to discuss various issues on how to bring the North East Region at par with the rest of the country with focus on foreign trade.
In his address, Shanmuganathan stressed the need for the North Eastern States to fully utilize the potentialities of the educated youth and to further strengthen and expand the economic ties with neighbouring countries. With the availability of rich pool of human resources and natural wealth the Governor expressed hope that these can be properly harnessed to ensure all round development of the region.
The Governor also expressed his expectations that the paper presentations by the experts and discussions during the seminar will come out with suggestions to improve foreign trade and bring socio ecnonomic development in the region. The Seminar was organized by the Shillong Commerce College at Don Bosco Youth Centre, Laitumkhrah which was sponsored by the Indian Council of Social Research (ICSR), North Eastern Region and University Grant Commission.
It was also attended by the Chief Secretary of Meghalaya, KS Kropha and his predecessor PBO Warjri, the Principal of Shillong Commerce College, J. B. Massar among others. The inaugural function was presided over by the President, Governing Body, Shillong Commerce College, T. Mark. Research scholars from Guwahati University, faculty members of Shillong College, St. Anthony’s College, Tura Government College besides the students also attended the Seminar .
