Dhaka, May 22: Deadly cyclonic storm Roanu left a total of 24 people dead and heavy rains lashed several areas of Bangladesh under the influence of the storm. The storm knocked down homes, toppled trees, breached dams, causing the fatalities in 7 coastal districts. Of the 22, 11 were killed in Chittagong, three in Bhola, three in Noakhali, three in Cox’s Bazar, one in Patuakhali, and one in Lakshmipur. Shamshuzzaman, upazila nirbahi officer of Banshkhali in Chittagong, told the Dhaka Tribune seven people were killed in Chhanua and Khankhanabad unions. “They died of wall and tree collapse, and drowning.”One of the seven victims was identified as Tahera Begum, 35, of Chhanua union. Banshkhali locals said many areas of the upazila were inundated by tidal surges as high as six feet, many shrimp enclosures were washed away, and some 500 thatched houses were wrecked.
In Sitakunda upazila’s Kalapania area, Kajla Begum, 50, wife of Mohammad Rafique, and her ten-year-old son Mohammad Belal were killed in a landslide in the morning. Assistant Superintendent of Police of Sitakunda Model police station Saiful Islam said torrential rain caused by Roanu triggered the landslide around 5am, killing the woman and her son inside their tin-roofed house built on a hill slope, the Dhaka Tribune reported.
In another incident, ten-year-old street boy Md Rakib died in Sholoshahar area as a brick fell on him from a tin-roofed house while Roanu was crossing Chittagong coast in the afternoon. Some bricks were kept on the roof to protect the dwelling and one of those was displaced by wind during the cyclone, said Panchlaish police station Sub-Inspector Abul Bashar.
The 11th victim in Chittagong died in the city’s Halishahar area but the identity could not be confirmed. In Noakhali, three people were killed - Minara Begum, 31, her daughter Romana Begum, 10, and Mahfuza Begum, 50, wife of Md Salah Uddin Bepari. The death toll was three also in Bhola, and they were killed in Tazumuddin and Daulatkhan upazilas. The dead are Rekha Begum, 35, Akram, 14, and Ranu Bibi, 50.
Roanu claimed three lives in Cox’s Bazar’s Kutubdia upazila, and they are Md Iqbal, 25, Fazlur Haque, 55, and Fakir Alam, 30. In Patuakhali, Nayan Bibi, 52, was killed in storms at north Charlakshmi village in Dashmina upazila. Anwarullah, 55, died in Lakshmipur Sadar upazila’s north Tewariganj after a tree fell on him during the storm. A cargo vessel with 4 crew is still missing in the Meghna river. The storm swept away several hundred shops and shacks in touristy Patenga area of Chittagong.
Media agencies report, after the Met Office issued danger signal 7 for Chittagong port and its adjacent areas on Friday afternoon, the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief in conjunction with Bangladesh Red Crescent Society began evacuating residents of coastal districts and sending them to cyclone shelters.
