Guwahati, May 24: With BJP forming its first government in North-east, Sarbanand Sonowal was today sworn in as the first BJP Chief Minister of Assam where Governor P.B. Acharya administered the oath of office to Sonowal and 10 of his ministerial colleagues at a grand ceremony in Guwahati.

Addressing a public gathering after swearing-in ceremony of Sarbanand Sonowal as the Chief Minister of Assam in Guwahati today, PM Modi said, Democracy is about participation and both the Centre and the States must walk shoulder to shoulder for development.During his address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated that his government believes in cooperative federalism and wants to give the states maximum strength and enable them to progress. Praising Sonowal, PM Modi said, a leader belonging to the tribal community and a leader dedicated to serving society is now be the CM of Assam.

BJP President Amit Shah hailed the people of Assam for keeping faith in the development works of the BJP. Chief Minister Sarbanand Sonowal vowed to make the state free from illegal migrants and corruption.

"I want to congratulate the people of Assam who have dreamt of development and given a chance to Sarbanand Sonowal, his team to serve the state. The democracy is all about 'Bhagidari' (partnership)," Prime Minister Modi said after the swearing-in ceremony of Sonowal.

"The Centre and the states must walk shoulder to shoulder for development. India's development has to be all-round, inclusive. The eastern part of India cannot remain away from the development journey," he added.

"Every government in the state has tried to work towards the betterment of Assam. This government will take forward their work and take Assam to newer heights. We want to give the states maximum strength and enable them to progress," he added.

PM Modi emphasized that North Eastern states can play a greater role in implementing the Act East policy of the Centre. He assured the people that the newly elected government under the leadership of Sonowal will serve Assam and work very hard to transform the state.
