Shillong, May 27: Union Minister of State for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), Dr. Jitendra Singh inaugurated the two day Plenary Meeting of North Eastern Council (NEC) in Shillong on Thursday, which is being attended by Governors and Chief Ministers of all the eight States of North Eastern region.Speaking on the occasion Dr.Jitendra Singh said, in the last two years under the NDA government, the North Eastern Region has witnessed path-breaking development in all spheres of life. He said today’s visit by Narendra Modi also assumes special significance because after nearly three decades a Prime Minister is going to attend the meeting of NEC.
On the occasion, while different Governors and Chief Ministers made their interventions, a detailed Report on NEC activities was presented by NEC Secretary Shri Ram Muivah with interventions by Union Secretary, DoNER Shri Naveen Verma. Among those present were Jyoti Prasad Rajkhowa, Governor of Arunachal Pradesh, Padmanabha Balakrishna Acharya, Governor of Nagaland, V. Shanmuganathan, Governor of Meghalaya and Manipur, Lt. Gen. (Retd) Nirbhay Sharma, Governor of Mizoram, Shriniwas Patil, Governor of Sikkim, Tathagata Roy, Governor of Tripura, Kalikho Pul, Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Sarbananda Sonowal, Chief Minister of Assam, Okram Ibobi Singh, Chief Minister of Manipur, Mukul Sangma, Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Lal Thanhawla, Chief Minister of Mizoram, T.R. Zeliang, Chief Minister of Nagaland and Pawan Chamling, Chief Minister of Sikkim.
Singh said that in the last one-and-a-half year since he took over the Ministry of DoNER, his endeavour has been to push forward maximum development works with minimum budget and to achieve targets through innovation and mutual cooperation. He said, particular emphasis has been laid on road development and spreading of rail network.Singh informed about the setting up of Brahmaputra Study Center at Guwahati University and introduction of Northeast Study Course at Jamia Millia Islamia University, Delhi. He said, land has already been acquired for setting up a Northeast student hostel in Jawaharlal Nehru University campus in Delhi and in University Campus at Bengaluru.
Singh particularly thanked all the Governors and Chief Ministers of North Eastern States and said that they have been always very forthcoming and kind in extending their cooperation and advice to him. It was because of their cooperation that he succeeded in holding a meeting of NEC at its headquarters at Shillong after a gap of 10 years, he added.
